Specific Annandale, VA dental equipment and services

Digital X-rays

Digital X-rays have replaced the traditional film/film developed x-rays of the past. Our digital x-rays are so detailed, so good that they allow us to diagnosis your dental problems in a much more accurate way.

Invisalign

Over the last few years Invisalign has revolutionized the way people think about straightening their teeth. Invisalign is a space age plastic resin that forms into a dental tray that pulls your teeth into the postions we, as Invisalign registered providers, prescribe. If your teeth need to be straightened, Invisalign is a great new option without the hassle of wire braces. Call today to see if Invisalign is right for you.

Dental Implants

As educators in the practice and use of dental implants in Annandale and Herndon, VA we offer our patients who have missing teeth the option of getting those missing teeth replaced with a dental implant. Dental implants are titanium posts  that are placed into your jaw in place of your dental root. Once your titanium implant is placed it will integrate into your jaw and become a permanent part of your jaw. Then we place a prosthetic tooth on an abutment that looks and acts just like a real tooth does. Call today for more information about the wonders of dental implants.

Dental Fillings

Dental caries or dental decay is what you talk about when you have a cavity. Dental caries is actually a disease that is characterized by bacteria left behind from the food you eat (particularly sugars and starches) that forms into acid on your tooth. This acid eats away at a tooth’s surface, the enamel. This acid is always present in the mouth. If left for long periods of time on the surface of your teeth it will eventually demineralize your tooth and cause cavities, or holes in the tooth

When a cavity is present in your mouth it can sometimes be seen, if the cavity is in a place that can be seen easily but often a cavity forms in-between your teeth. These cavities in-between your teeth cannot easily be detected until you make a visit to our office in Annandale. We use our sophisticated digital x-ray system and find these cavities that are hard to find.

The process that we take to resolve the problem with a cavity is to remove the decayed portion of the tooth with a tool like a drill or bur. The decayed portion of your tooth needs to be completely removed in order to stop the progression of the caries. Of course before we drill on your tooth we always give anesthetic to eliminate painful sensations to your teeth.

Once the decayed portion is removed we completely clean and dry the affected area. After the dental decay is removed and the area is dry and clean we start the process of filling the area with composite material that mimics the color and texture of your original tooth. A quality dental filling, like the ones we do at Nova Dental Practice will stop the dental caries and eliminate the need to get a root canal, the final destination of dental decay.

Tooth Aches

The other way that a cavity in-between your teeth or below the gum line is found is when they start to hurt. If your cavity hurts then this could be a bad thing. Often, if a cavity hurts it’s the result of a dental decay that has gone completely to the root of your tooth. This is a problem because once your tooth’s root encounters decay the tooth is compromised to the point of no return.

Tooth aches are one piece of evidence of decay in the tooth’s root. But not all tooth aches mean that the rot has reached the root. Once the decay has reached the root pulp of your teeth we need to discuss the Root Canal.

Root Canal

A root canal is the course of action once your tooth has been compromised with decay in it’s root. The decay that hits a root can paralyze its health.  It causes infection inside of your tooth and if left untreated can lead to an abcessed tooth.

In order to treat an infected root you will need to remove the pulp from your tooth’s root. Once the pulp is removed your tooth is effectively “dead”. It’s now a shell of a tooth and not a living tooth.
